One might also say that whatever is afflicting Brooks, he is not alone. Throwing away your wicket seems to have become endemic - witness Jamie Smith, who has excelled this summer, throwing his wicket away the last ball before tea, and thereby probably dooming to a (well deserved) defeat by Sri Lanka. And Pope - such a glorious batsman in his prime. I wonder what his pre and past injury stats are, as it seems to me he has never been the same since the injury to his shoulder.

In all cases, we do have the backroom staff there who should be able to correct these problems. If not, India and Australia will gobble us up.

I do applaud the bringing of new blood though. That's been great. Didn't hear about the horror story regarding Gus Atkinson's mum, but dealing with that AND producing stunning bowling and batting - well, fair play, Gus. Tip of the hat.

Many pluses from the new squad. But also, a lot to work on if we

The same issue affects Root, I know you don’t like hearing this back home and yes for Root they’re usually 70s not 30s

BUT

Still too often, especially against Australia you see Root get 70 odd and play a lazy shot that seems to indicate an attitude of ‘well I’ve done my job’ then we watch Smith or Marnus come out and make 180 and win the game (another issue with Root, too many scores between 100-110, again indicating the ‘I’ve done my job’ mindset)

I have to live among bloody Aussies so would really appreciate it if the English batsman that get in next year kick on and make the big 150+ hundreds, not pretty little 70s

My ex and I were in Oz late 2002, to hang with an old old friend from our Oxford days in the 70s. She fixed up a tour of South Australia, to drink and eat fine steak, plus a couple of days in the outback to catch the total eclipse (wow. Just wow). Boy did we get a battering in the various bars we drank in 😢😢

Mate, my family emigrated to Australia in January 1988 when I was 10 years old

Just in time to get the years of failure

From 1989 to 2003 I would convince myself every series that England could win and every series I would be in the receiving end of much mockery. When I was making arguments (pre-series but still) that Phil Defreitas or Derrick Pringle would run through the Aussies because ‘they can’t play swing’ it really meant i deserved the mockery I guess

Brook has the potential to be a wonderful player, but at present he looks an easy read to a shrewd opposition captain.

At his best he appears absolutely contemptuous of the opposition; his dismissiveness of their attack a joy to behold.

At his worst he appears contemptuous of common sense itself.

I’m sure he’ll find the middle ground given time and hope that this series will prove a learning experience ahead of India and Australia next year.
